Five Coleg Llandrillo Cymru Media students are celebrating after gaining first and third place at a new film festival.
The BTEC National Diploma in Media Production students entered the “Made in Wales” film-making competition at this year's Denbigh Film Festival. Adam Wilson and Alex Linton, both from Llandudno, scooped the first prize in the open category for their short film, “The Painter”. David Edwards from Denbigh, Sam Blair from St Asaph and Jacob Jones from Old Colwyn were awarded third place for their music video, “Weapon of Choice”, a comedic pastiche of Fatboy Slim’s award-winning video, which was filmed in a local supermarket.
There were 3 categories, primary schools, secondary schools and open to all. At the presentation, one of the adjudicators, David Berry, said: “These are examples of production work of the highest quality; creative and original with a lustre of professionalism”. The students received cash prizes and certificates.
Hollywood superstar Sir Anthony Hopkins sent a personal message of support to the film festival. The acting legend was thrilled to learn that the Denbigh Film Festival was honouring his all-time hero Richard Burton. Burton’s film debut, ‘The Last Days of Dolwyn’, was screened at the festival.
The three day film festival, the first to be staged in Denbigh’s Theatr Twm o'r Nant, was dedicated to the cinematic activities in Wales over the past 100 years. The theme was Wales and its people, reflected in films made in and outside Wales with contributions by distinguished film-makers and actors of Welsh origin. The aim was to present a range of films which celebrate the artistic vision and achievements of these film-makers, past and present, as well as present the socio-economic reality of life in the 20th century, which is already a period of history in itself.
