Qualifications Explained

Postgraduate Awards (Level 7+): PGCE
These include Doctorates, Degrees and certain professional qualifications. You will normally require an Honours Degree to study at Postgraduate Level. However, relevant work experience may be taken into consideration. Assessment is by project work, case studies, formal examinations and continuous assessment.
Honours Degree (Level 6): BA (Hons) & BSc (Hons)
Honours Degrees are university level qualifications that normally take three years to complete full-time. Honours Degrees achieved in the UK are recognised worldwide. Assessment is by course work, project work, formal examination or dissertation. As a graduate, you could then go on to study at Postgraduate Level.
Foundation Degree (Level 5): FDSc & FDa
The Foundation Degree combines work experience with a two year full-time academic or professional programme. After the Foundation Degree, you could top up to a full Honours Degree.
Higher National Diploma (Level 5): HND
An HND is a university level qualification that takes two years full-time to complete. Successful completion may allow you to be accepted onto the third year of a Degree course.
Higher National Certificate (Level 4/5): HNC
An HNC is a work-related university level qualification normally studied full-time for a year. On completion, you could progress onto an HND or Foundation Degree and could then move on to a full Honours Degree.
International Baccalaureate Diploma (Level 3): IB
This academic qualification is recognised and welcomed worldwide by universities and the professions. The wide range of options will give you an all round academic experience. Assessment is by formal written and oral examinations, course work and projects.
Advanced Subsidiary Level & Advanced Level (Level 3): AS & A Level
AS and A Levels provide entry into all UK universities. You can take three or four subjects at AS Level in the first year, continuing with three of these subjects to achieve the full A Level in the second year. Assessment is by formal examination, course work and/or projects.
Business & Technology Education Council (Level 2/3): BTEC
BTEC Nationals are leading work-related qualifications and are acceptable for entry into university. The National Award is equivalent to one A Level, the National Certificate is equivalent to two A Levels and the National Diploma is equivalent to four GCSEs. Assessment is through assignment and project work.
