International Student Admissions Criteria
Following the introduction of the new Points Based System Tier 4 Student Visa regulations, Llandrillo College has revised its admissions requirements for International students.
All international students applying to study at Llandrillo College must submit:
- A completed application form, in own handwriting (download)
- A career plan (download)
- A translated transcript of existing qualifications
- Evidence of English language level (IELTS/TOEFL) - no more than 2 years old
- A copy of valid passport
*Llandrillo College will accept any of the approved English Language tests as specified by the UK Border Agency. These include IELTS, TOEFL (Centre Code: 8356), PTE Academic and Cambridge ESOL qualifications.

Stage 1: Application
Post, fax or email all your documents including your completed application form to Llandrillo College's International Office.
In order to ensure your application is dealt with as quickly as possible, please include the following:
- A passport sized photograph of yourself.
- A letter of reference.
- A letter from the person who will be paying your tuition fees saying they will fund all your studies and living costs for the duration of your course.
You may be required to complete an English language test paper. If you have been asked to do so by the International Team, you may download it from here.
Stage 2: CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies)
A CAS from the College will be sent to you to enable you to apply for your student visa from the British Embassy or High Commission in your country. We will then send you an invoice for the balance of your registration fee, followed by your CAS.
Stage 3: Final Arrangements
You should inform us as soon as you have received your student visa. You should return an accommodation request form together with an airport collection form (both can be downloaded below) as soon as possible. The balance of your fees should be transferred at this stage, or at least four weeks before the start of your course.
Stage 4: Arrival & Welcome
After arriving at Manchester Airport, the driver will take you immediately to your accommodation. On your first day at College, you will be met by a member of the International Team who will show you around the College, introduce you to your Personal Tutor and generally help you settle in.

Full time English Courses
English Language - 11 months or less – (Student Visitor Visa route)
For courses of 11 months or less, students with Elementary (A2), Pre-Intermediate and Intermediate (B1) level will be offered a course without evidence of previous study. Students will be required to sit a test in order to determine that they are placed on the correct level of English course. Students studying for six months or less may commence their course at any time of the year by agreement. The College reserves the right to not accept students with a lower level of English as we may not be offering courses lower than Pre-Intermediate level.
Students coming through the Student Visitor Visa route:
- May not work
- May not bring dependents
- May not renew their visas in the UK
- Must return home following their course of study
English Language - 11 months or more (Tier 4 Student visa route)
For courses of more than 11 months, students will be accepted through the Tier 4 General Student Visa route. Students should show evidence of having English Language skills up to B1. In normal circumstances this evidence will be a current IELTS certificate with an average band score of IELTS 4.0 or above or equivalent recognised English language qualification gained in the last 2 years.
Students with no official evidence of previous English language study, or without the required level of English will not be accepted for full-time studies at Llandrillo College.
Students applying for a full-time English course of 11 months or more must submit a ‘Career Plan’ in addition to the College ‘Application form.’
Students with sufficient English language levels (IELTS 5.0 or above) will not normally be accepted to a full time English courses and will be expected to study a relevant Foundation, Pre Degree/level 3 or Undergraduate course.
Pre-Degree Courses
A levels and level 3 vocational qualifications including BTEC Nationals
The minimum acceptable English level is IELTS 5.0 or equivalent. Applicants must produce evidence of study / tested to this level within the past 2 years.
In certain circumstances students with lower than IELTS 5.0 may undertake Pre-sessional English to gain unconditional acceptance for September start.
- IELTS 4.0 or equivalent - Pre-sessional English of 24 weeks (or more)
- IELTS 4.5 or equivalent - Pre-sessional English of 16 weeks (or more)
Normally students should have successfully completed the equivalent of the Secondary School Leaving Certificate, Year 10 or GCSE equivalent studies.
Pre-Degree Foundation Programmes
Applicants will normally have completed their High School Leaving Certificate, Year 10 or AS equivalent School certificates.
The minimum acceptable English level is IELTS 5.0 or equivalent. Applicants must produce evidence of study / test to this level within the past 2 years.
In certain circumstances students with lower than IELTS 5.0 may undertake Pre-sessional English to gain unconditional acceptance for September starts.
- IELTS 4.0 or equivalent - Pre-sessional English of 24 weeks (or more)
- IELTS 4.5 or equivalent - Pre-sessional English of 16 weeks (or more)
International Baccalaureate
The minimum acceptable English level is IELTS 5.5 or equivalent. Applicants must produce evidence of study / tested to this level within the past 2 years.
In certain circumstances students with lower than IELTS 5.5 may undertake Pre-sessional English to gain unconditional acceptance for September starts.
- IELTS 4.5 or equivalent - Pre-sessional English of 24 weeks (or more)
- IELTS 5.0 or equivalent - Pre-sessional English of 16 weeks (or more)
Normally students should have successfully completed the equivalent of the Secondary School Leaving Certificate, Year 10 or GCSE equivalent studies.
Please note that all students entering Level 3/ English B2 courses from September 2010:
- Will be permitted to work 10 hours per week only in term time
- Will only be permitted to study for a maximum of 3 years at this level
Undergraduate Degree Programmes
For students from most countries a good grade profile in the High School Leaving Certificate or AS/A level equivalent courses will give entry to our Undergraduate Degree Programmes. Normally applicants must show evidence of ‘life experience’.
Students lacking a suitable grade profile, and without relevant vocational experience, will be expected to complete a Pre-Degree Foundation Programme prior to acceptance.
The minimum acceptable English level is IELTS 5.5 or equivalent. Applicants must produce officially recognised evidence of study / testing to this level within the past 2 years.
In certain circumstances students with lower than IELTS 5.5 may undertake Pre-sessional English to gain unconditional acceptance for September starts.
- IELTS 4.5 or equivalent - Pre-sessional English of 24 weeks (or more)
- IELTS 5.0 or equivalent - Pre-sessional English of 16 weeks (or more)
Students entering Degree level courses with IELTS 5.5 only will be expected to study English further to ensure they can cope with the demands of the course.
Advanced Entry/Credit Transfer
Students wishing to gain advanced entry and credits transfer to years 2 or 3 of the Degree programmes must have IELTS 6.0 or above. This will be subject to the University of Wales Credit Transfer system and direct entry cannot be guaranteed.
Pre-masters Programmes
Students will be expected to hold a Bachelor Degree in a relevant subject.
The minimum acceptable English level is IELTS 5.5 or equivalent. Applicants must produce evidence of study/tested to this level within the past 2 years.
In certain circumstances students with lower than IELTS 5.5 may undertake Pre-sessional English to gain unconditional acceptance for September starts.

- IELTS 4.5 or equivalent - Pre-sessional English of 16 weeks (or more)
