Cost of Living in the UK

Britain’s decimal currency is based on the pound sterling (£), which is divided into 100 pence (100p). Coins are issued up to the value of £2.00, which is: 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1.00 and £2.00. There are £5.00, £10.00, £20.00 and £50.00 notes.

How Much Money Will I Need?

Prices may vary in Wales in contrast to those in your own country. Here are some examples to help you with your finances:

  • Cigarettes £4.50 - £5.00 (cheaper in supermarkets)
  • Beer/lager £1.50-£2.90 per pint
  • A visit to the Cinema cost around * £7.00 and the nearest one is in Llandudno Junction. Check in the local weekly newspapers for details of the films that are showing each week. (*Tickets are cheaper on a Tuesday evening).
  • Night clubs cost about £5.00 admission but they may charge more on the weekend.
  • In some restaurants you can eat for as little as £5.00 but an average meal costs £8.00 for one course.
  • Taxis are more expensive than using the bus. Ask the driver first how much a journey to your destination will cost.
