Who the course is for

Would you like to develop practical skills in childcare? Are you looking for a career in the children’s services sector? This course allows you to develop the fundamental skills for this profession. It prepares you to work with children aged 0-16, in supervised roles across a range of careers. This includes work in schools, nurseries, healthcare and other contexts.

The course delivers a practical programme, focusing on the needs of real job roles and situations. In college and in a period of work experience, you will be able to acquire many of the competencies set out in the National Occupational Standards of the sector. You will also develop the knowledge to progress onto more advanced study.

What you will study

The course consists of the following units:

- An introduction to working with children
- The developing child
- Safe, healthy and nurturing environments for children
- Children and play
- Communication and professional skills within child care and education
- The child care practitioner in the workplace (practical unit mostly in placement)
- One other unit to be confirmed at a later date

The course is delivered through a blend of the following:

- Lectures
- Discussions
- Practical exercises
- Case studies
- Outside visits
- Interactive learning
- 390 practical training hours
- Self study
- Group work

Assessment

The course is assessed through a blend of the following:

- Coursework and assignments
- Student profile
- Observation of your placement work
- Practical competence assessments and reports
- Multiple choice exam for one unit

Duration

- Full-time for one year
- Three days in college and two days on placement per week

Entry Requirements

Academic requirements:
- Two GCSEs at grade C or above; or,
- CACHE Foundation Award in Caring for Children Level 1
- Other qualifications and experience will be considered at the tutor’s discretion
- You must have good standards of literacy and numeracy
- You should be motivated and enthusiastic about the subject

Other requirements:
- During the interview stage, students with learning disabilities should provide details and evidence of their needs
- You will be required to complete a DBS check during the interview phase, costing £44
- You will be required to purchase one textbook, and a sweatshirt to wear on placement

Progression

Completion of this course improves your employability and gives you important knowledge and skills. You will be able to start your career as an Early Years Practitioner in a supervised role.

In education, the course gives you a number of options. At Coleg Llandrillo, you could progress onto the CACHE Level 3 course in Children’s Care, Learning & Development. You could also apply for another Level 3 programme, or one of our work-based courses in childcare or health and social care.
