The first students who will be starting at the new Rhyl Sixth received their GCSE results today.

The joyous students were not only celebrating their GCSE successes but were also looking forward to studying at the Rhyl Sixth this September, before moving over to the new Welsh Assembly funded, £3.5m building on the site of Coleg Llandrillo Rhyl in Sept 2010.

Katherine Richards from Rhyl gained 10 GCSE passes, obtaining 3 A grades in Maths, Religious Education and Textiles. Katherine said: “I am really happy with my results; I didn’t think I would do that well. I am really looking forward to starting my A Levels in the new Rhyl Sixth.”

Tom Evans, also from Rhyl, was delighted with his 13 GCSE passes, gaining an A* as well as 4 As, 6 Bs and 2 Cs. Tom said: “I could have done better in my Maths, but overall, I am delighted with my grades. The Rhyl Sixth is an exciting concept for the area and should be an excellent facility.”

The Rhyl Sixth is a new development which will offer outstanding choice and quality to post-16 learners in Rhyl and surrounding areas from September 2009. It’s a partnership sixth form for the young people of Rhyl and the surrounding area, offering the widest choice of A/AS Level and vocational subject options in Denbighshire. Students will not only benefit from a much extended A Level and vocational curriculum but, from 2010, will enjoy facilities which are on a par with the very best in Wales.

The exciting new curriculum has been developed by the College with partner schools and, from September 2010, will be delivered in a dedicated, custom-built, multi million pound centre on the Coleg Llandrillo Rhyl campus. Welsh Assembly Government funding has been secured, planning approval has been given and the College is currently appraising tender returns for the new centre.

Rhyl Sixth can help students gain the skills and qualifications needed to set them on their pathways to future career successes. Students at Rhyl Sixth can study for both AS/A Levels and Vocational Courses, in subjects ranging from Biology, Design Technology and Spanish to Performing Arts. The experienced tutors will provide students with the highest standards of learning and excellent opportunities to progress on to their dream jobs.

Welsh Education Minister Jane Hutt said: “The development of the Rhyl Sixth will be an exciting facility for post-16 learners in the Rhyl area. With the construction of new facilities, pupils will have an extensive choice of study options, both vocational and academic, in a convenient location and in modern buildings. I believe that young people in Rhyl will identify strongly with the Rhyl Sixth and aspire to become part of this brand new learning environment.”

Coleg Llandrillo Cymru Principal, Huw Evans OBE, said: “The College, which has one of its major sites in Rhyl, is working closely with partners to develop this new opportunity. The Rhyl Sixth and Coleg Llandrillo Rhyl will extend and improve opportunities available for all young people in the area and will bring considerable benefit to the local population.”
