New £3.5million Sixth Form Centre Given Go Ahead
26 March 2009
Plans to build a new, dedicated sixth form Centre in Rhyl have been given the go ahead.
2010 will see pupils moving across to a custom built, £3.5million Rhyl Sixth on Coleg Llandrillo Cymru’s Rhyl Campus. Pupils will not only benefit from a much extended A Level and vocational curriculum giving them the widest choice of subjects in Denbighshire, the facilities available will be on a par with the very best in Wales.
The dedicated centre will have private study rooms, a common room, a large study space and new teaching and learning areas including high specification laboratories. Learners will also have access to the latest IT facilities, careers library, Higher Education resources and, for break time in between classes, cafes and a student lounge.
Coleg Llandrillo Cymru Principal, Huw Evans OBE, said: “The College is working closely with partners to develop this new opportunity. The Rhyl Sixth and Coleg Llandrillo Rhyl will extend and improve opportunities available for all young people in the area and will bring considerable benefit to the local population.”
The widest subject choice in Denbighshire The College has already jointly planned a much extended curriculum for September 2009, which will see sixth formers being offered subjects at both Rhyl High School and at College. New AS choices on offer include Film Studies, Electronics, Psychology, English Language and Sociology. The curriculum will then be further developed in time for the launch of the new Rhyl Sixth centre in 2010, where learners will be able to choose from over 30 A Level and vocational subjects.
“This is a significant development for the young people of Rhyl. It means they will have the best possible choice of courses to suit their individual learning and career needs and, from late 2010, delivery will be in 21st century accommodation” said Canon John Glover, Chair of Rhyl High School Board of Governors.
Dedicated support and guidance
Rhyl Sixth pupils will have access to one-to-one support from experienced and supportive staff throughout their course including Personal Tutor support, study skills sessions, revision sessions, career planning, financial advice, health and welfare support and optional College/home partnerships – all the support they’ll need to ensure their success at College and to help prepare them for work or university. Strong links with the school will also be maintained, with sixth form pupils continuing to mentor and support their younger peers.
Serena Jones, studying AS Law, Psychology and Sociology at Coleg Llandrillo Cymru said: “College has helped me become more independent and push myself to do my best. The tutors are very helpful, really supportive and easy to get on with. It’s a very polite, relaxed environment with great facilities. I’m planning to go to university when I’m finished here.”
