What you will study
The FCA (Foundation Construction Award) Decorative Occupations is a useful course if you have no previous decorating skills and are looking for a change in career direction. The course will cover the basic skills of Painting and Decorating and could help you pursue a career in the Construction Industry or could be used to complement your existing career.
Subjects covered on the course include:
- Handle and store resources
- Contribute to work relationships
- Contribute to providing working platforms
- Clear and protect the work area
- Prepare surfaces for decoration
- Apply decorative materials

This course is suitable if you would like to change direction and learn a new skill. It is also aimed at you if you would like to add some basic skills to your own portfolio.
This course is also suitable if you're unemployed or would like to retrain.
How you will study
Delivery is by way of workshop based practical tasks with job knowledge assignments.
How you will be assessed
You will be assessed through a series of practical tasks and job knowledge assessments. There is also an externally set, online GOLA assessment.
Qualification Title
CITB/City and Guilds Foundation Construction Award in Decorative Occupations
Course Length
One year full-time and part-time.
Attainment of the required number of units can be accelerated to match your individual needs or ability.
The course can be studied full-time (15 hours per week) or on part-time day basis (fee payable).

Entry Requirements
Building Craft Foundation course. Motivation, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn are essential. Candidates without this qualification will be considered on an individual basis.
Your Options After the Course
After the course you could progress onto the ICA (Intermediate Construction Award) Decorative Occupations.
You could also go into employment in the Construction sector.
