BTEC First Diploma in Retail

What you will study

This course will develop your skills and knowledge in Retail. The course covers retail elements including Customer Service, Merchandising, Stock Control and Distribution.

Who the course is for

This course is particularly suitable if you're wishing to study prior to working in the retail sector. It is suitable if you wish to return to learning and have an interest in working in the retail sector or are considering a career change.

The course will provide you with experience of working in a retail environment and using associated equipment such as electronic cash registers, bar code readers and EPOS. This experience will be gained by a combination of training in our Real Work Environment/Virtual Shop, running the Student Shop and a work placement.

How you will study

You will be with your personal tutor for many of their lessons which will be a combination of taught classes and assignment work. Practical sessions will be held in the Real Work Environment/Virtual Shop/Student Shop with a supervisor who will give you instructions on using equipment and carry out competency based observations.

How you will be assessed

Six assignments will be completed for the BTEC First Diploma in Retail, these will be assessed by your tutor and sent to the Awarding Body for verification and certification. There are four grades available for an assignment: Unclassified, Pass, Merit and Distinction. You will compile a portfolio of evidence for Key Skills and NVQ Customer Service.

Qualification Title

BTEC First Diploma in Retail. You will also gain qualifications including NVQ Customer Service Level 2, Key Skills Communication, Application of Number and ICT (Level 2).

Course Length

One year, full-time (four days a week with family friendly hours).

Entry Requirements

Two GCSEs at Grade C or above, BTEC Introductory Diploma with Merit/Distinction or equivalent level one qualification.

A general standard of education is necessary to cope with this course; this can be discussed with you at the interview.

Your Options After the Course

After the course you could progress onto:

- BTEC National Diploma Business/Retail/Event Management
- AS & A Levels
- Modern Apprenticeship

The qualification will also provide you with a recognised qualification for employment within the business sector.
