BTEC First Diploma in Construction
What you will study
The BTEC First Diploma in Construction is a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations and activities. This course will provide you with the essential skills and knowledge for a career
in the Construction industry. Topics include Construction Management & Design, Surveying and Building Surveying.
The course is made up of six units – three core units that everyone takes and three specialist units. The specialist units enable you to study particular areas in more depth.
Core units:
- Introduction to the Construction Industry
- Investigating Health, Safety & Welfare
- Construction Science & Mathematics
Three technician units:
- Construction Processes & Operations
- Construction Methods & Techniques
- Construction Drawing Techniques
or three craft units:
- Investigating Carpentry & Joinery
- Investigating Trowel Operations
- Investigating Painting & Decorating
Who the course is for
This course is designed if you're a school leaver or if you're wanting to study full-time for a technician career in Construction but are unable to enrol directly onto a BTEC National programme.
How you will study
You will learn through a variety of activities but the emphasis will be on the practical application of skills and knowledge. Besides lectures, tutorials, site visits and work experience, students choosing the craft options will have practice at carpentry, bricklaying and decorating while technician students develop drawing and other skills.
How you will be assessed
All units are assessed and graded and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded.

Entry Requirements
Complete Introductory Diploma, 2 GCSEs Grade D or above including Maths or NVQ 1 or 2 in Construction. For mature students flexible entry requirements apply.
Your Options After the Course
After the course you could progress onto the BTEC National Award/Diploma in Construction.
These courses are also designed to provide a grounding whether you wish to become a craftsman in a construction trade or work as a technician in design or construction administration. Progression through further training and qualification can lead to careers such as architectural or engineering design, surveying, construction administration, bricklaying, carpentry or decorating.
